Clouds Make a Difference (Nina Agelvis Week#1)

These two photos were both taken in Taiwan! The first photo (the sunset) was taken outside of the Banquiao Main Train Station, and the second photo (the morning sky) was taken at my grandmother's cemetery. From the two photos I have realized how different the cloud's texture could change the image of the photo. Both skies look like time is moving on, but the one with less clouds gives off the effect of time moving by faster. The thickness of the clouds in the sunset gives a heavy and still feeling. I think both photos are illuminated beautifully. I like how in the sunset you could still see a few details on the buildings and the silhouette, and in the morning photo you could see the greens popping out in comparison to the blue sky. To me, the sunset that is filled with amber colors makes me feel like I am being still in the moment, and being engulfed by the thickness of the clouds. As for the one with less clouds, it made me feel like the day is moving on, and I am free to run and open my arms and feel the cool, fast breeze in my face. Tell me what you think of these two photos? Are there gobos that could recreate the clouds similar to these textures? Or are there any other ways to show the texture?

  1. I love how amber the sky and the clouds are in the sunset picture and how they almost choppily mix in witht the untouched blue sky still remaining (almost stubbornly). :) I also really like the idea about the movement of the clouds and the passing of time. It's interesting how the clouds almost seem to be moving in different directions at the two opposite times of day.

  2. oooooh beautiful photos!!! They both have such a fresh feeling! I love where you mention the breeze on your face, because that is exactly what I thought of with that second picture. There is also something nice about those puffy clouds and the angle at which you took the photo. Being up high on a rolling hill with the majority of the clouds in the distance helps the distance and depth of the photo really stand out, which in turn I think helps us envision movement...where as the solid carpet of clouds is absolutely stunning but showcases less movement and depth. Clouds act as a natural light diffuser...the more red or amber the sunset is, the more particles (or most likely smog if you're in LA) are in the air. There are lots of ways to show the texture in the sky, the most effective being collaboration with a scenic designer...using a combination of the cyc and scrim, as well as cloud gobos (or even realistic 3D glass gobos!) would create a beautiful, complex sky!
