Week 2 Love

I saw these flowers and plants at night. It reminds me of love because the light gives me a sense of intimacy. The floor lamp only lights part of the plants very bright while the other remains dark. This isolation reminds me of film shots in romantic movies, like two characters in love forget their surroundings, and the only thing they can see is each other. The floor lamp has a similar effect there.

I guess the other reason this reminds me of love is the color. I am not sure if that flower is rose, but it looks like rose… The contrast of red flowers and green leaves under dark night is strong. It reminds me the passion of love, but these two colors might not be good combination for lighting, since green and red light will remind people Christmas, instead of love.

Sean Deuel Week 2 (Love)

This pathway of trees lit by "Christmas" lights stood out to me for this weeks theme of Love. The lights were a bit more amber than the appear (because of my phones white balance) so there was a warmness to the scene. While it is not a very well lit area, for me that built a little bit more romance into the scene and a bit of secretiveness to it as well. When I look at this path I picture a couple walking away into after a date night with love in the air.

Love is a Desert

This post was hard. I don't feel love. Because I'm dead inside.

I do love art and theatre though. And as I was leaving the art's campus the other day, I saw this great shadow catch the outside wall of the Robert Cohen Theatre. The shadow extends in the late day sun and is, I think, quite beautiful

I will say that, as a converse, I DO NOT love this weather. So hot. WTF California? It was like 100 degrees the other day. I literally felt ill ... Not unlike the feeling of being in love. Gross.

This photo is a juxtaposition. In contains an image of something I care deeply about (art, theatre, etc), but at the same time somehow feels empty and lost and reminds me of the desert that is Orange county. The desert, if you will, of emotions.

Week 2 Faded Love (Nina Agelvis)

I know this composition looks very dim for the word "Love" but to me this photo carries a lot of love for me, because it is (was) my home. After all the struggle I went through back in Taiwan and now not only returning home alone, but also returning home to give up your home. The warm amber lighting on the top window hitting on the silk curtains gives off a comforting and welcoming feeling. But the shape and the distance of the window almost looks like if it was slowly distancing away from you. It is like the one place in your heart that you don't want to let go but eventually it will just fade away. I like how you could see the path leading to the door, yet the door is pitch dark in a shadow. It gives you the feeling of being cut off from the warmth of your own home. The little lantern on the path is like the little bit of hope that still remains in your heart. The light inside the lantern is actually imitating an actual candle. Of course to me it seems like the representation is poorly done because I would think that if it were to have actual fire inside, the lantern would have a slight glow around the lantern itself, instead of being trapped on the bottom. Correct me if I am wrong about the lantern, but how would the lighting look if the lantern were to have an actual candle inside? I guess this is a different way to depict love, but I feel like a lot of the love in your life starts from home, and leaving it can sometimes be heartbreaking.

Lighting in Other Places - Garden (Love)

When I think of love, I think of bright, in your face, spring colours and very noticeable. So when I saw these flowers in my garden, somewhat isolated from the other bunches of bougainvillea, I thought it fit the bill quite nicely. It was very front lit and it really brought the pink colour to life. The natural vibrancy made it hard to miss against the white walls of my house and I guess I really found a connection to young love. Though my initial though of love was "Sunset" I found that love has many forms and many representations in lighting, and for a more young love the flowers in the garden work nicely. Just goes to show that multiple interpretations of the same word can bring out some very different and equally beautiful compositions.

Week 2: Rae Crocker

I find the lighting in this scene to be romantic because of how the light filters through the leaves and reflects off of the water. The light pictured here is not romantic in the sense of passion or lust, but rather a more familiar love. In this lighting I can envision a couple having a picnic or reading together under a tree. There is a sense of comfort created with the soft light fluttering through the leaves and palm fronds creating a sense of seclusion and secrecy - "a place only we know". The bright light in the scene creates a happy feeling, as if the couple were epnjoying one an others company and are wittily bantering back and forth. The shadows create a sense of privacy within the moment - as if the audience were observing a private moment - whilst also creating a whimsical atmosphere from the actual shape and pattern of the shadows. The sense of fantasy created by the whimsical shadows helps to establish the emotion in the moment, that perhaps the world only appears to be more whimsical because that is the slightly skewed way in which the couple in love views the world.

Lighting in Other Places - Bioshock

I thought I would start off on the side of fantastical as video game lighting has a special place in my heart. This is the concept of from a horror game called Bioshock, and it really captures the essence of creepy for me throughout the game. Almost all of the lighting from the city comes from below, and what light that comes from the ceiling is merely a reflection of that in the water that surrounds the city. This makes the game dark and twisted, full of shadows, and keeps the audience on edge. Humans are used to a source of light coming from above in some way, and when the shadows and lights are flipped, and I think it captures just how different and effective the light. It just really well done and I hope one day to be able to use such peculiar lighting ideas to my own odds and ends. It's nice to remember that now all light has to be in a theatrical setting.
