These Magjestic Halls - Haunted Library

I always thought it was funny how we personify buildings and other abstract objects. And perhaps this is in part due to lighting. Coming home from a rehearsal, I see the Science Library from a different light. (See what I did there?) I see the building every day and find that, like most good architecture, the building exhibits different moods depending on the angle, lighting, and perhaps the emotional state of the viewer. Here I'm elevated at a distance as I leave Aldrich park. The aura of the building gives off an odd mix of creepy and majestic. Here the architecture is imposing and the dimming daylight surrounded by the low dim of street light, along with the light inside the building, almost makes the space look spooky and haunted.

Week 5 –– Nightsky

Malibu, CA (2am, 10/31/15)

I drove to Malibu Beach last night for shooting stars and the milky way. The moonlight was not very strong last night so I could see a clear nightsky with so many stars. The light of the universe was so strong like a par can that pushed me back and made me feel so small. Although there were not many shadows on the photo, it was totally dark around me with no street light, car light, and etc. In addition, the cool blue on the top of the sky and the warm yellow on the bot of the sky contrasted, and that color mixing brought a great sense of the mystical world and insignificance of people.

Lighting in Other Places - Halloween

I absolutely love Jack-O-lanterns. They're not common where I grew up to they're so much fun when you finally get a chance to make you're own. They're also like having a custom made gobo. Depending on what kind and how many lights you put in them, they can be a creepy red to an eerie amber. They really add to the emotion of such a fun holiday, and on dark streets like where mine was placed, they have such a cool effect on the streets, on the buildings, and resonate more with the people who pass them by. It's interesting with how much we can connect with such a simple light source, but they can make all the difference on a dark and creepy night like Halloween.

Week 5 Halloween Candles

What I love about this candle are the different things happening in regards to lighting. Around the base of the candle is a steady orange glow from the wax. Then the light from the flame bounces off the ghost and the table, flickering. I love the inconsistent shadows the flame causes when it flickers. It is also interesting to note that there is absolutely no wind that would warrant the flame flickering about as much as it does. It's not a steady flame, like what would be found at a romantic candle light dinner. It's an anxious, inconsistent, wavering flame that you would find in a horror movie right before someone gets a jump scare from behind.

Week 5 Mingna

I saw this elevator at night at South Coast Plaza. The elevator looks so different at night, with these deep blue color lights. At daytime, it just looks like, an elevator, no difference than other elevators. This difference reminds me of how light can change so much of our perception of an object. The bright light strip highlights the silhouette of the elevator door. The elevator also reflects lights in front of it. There is a bridge in front of the elevator, and the lights from the bridge is the source of the reflection. It looks mystical, and because of the reflection of those yellow dots, it feels like inviting me to a mystical world through the elevator door.

Sean Deuel Week 5

I found myself rather interested in the shadow play cast by these poles being hit from three different light sources. There are three sources: two cooler ones from the upper and lower left, and then one warmer one from the lower right. The shadows cast onto the lower right crisscross each other. The shadows on the right get softer and more angled as the poles move away from their light source, while the shadows on the left seem more parallel and of similarly dark because of the stronger but more distant source. It is also interesting to notice that the right shadows are less well defined while the ones on the left remain a clean cut image.

Week 5 Halloween!! (Nina Agelvis)

Happy Halloween guys!! This is a photo of the Halloween makeup I did. If you can't see it clearly its a gorged eye and a slit open throat. This photo was taken in a friend's apartment. I found it cool that he used red trash bags to cover the ceiling light, making it work like a gel. Of course you can tell that the light is not evenly covered by the red trash bag, because the redness doesn't lit up in the entire photo. You could still see the amber color slightly mixing in with the reddish tone. I like how the light wasn't a deep blood red, it worked really nicely with my skin tone. It didn't darken me so much that you couldn't see the wounds. Instead, it made the wounds even more realistic. I wish there could have been more shadows to create a better structure in my face but overall the lighting and the color complimented with everything.

And here is a photo of my wounds in a amber indoor apartment lighting. Although the colors and the details in my wounds look more vibrate compared to the ones taken in the red lighting, I still had a lot of fun seeing the difference on the details of my wounds in different lighting. I even got a kid flashing his flashlight on my face in the streets just too see the blood glistening in the light, making it look like it was a freshly cut wound. Hope everyone had a fun Halloween!
